Pleasant Valley Community Council

This website is owned and maintained by the members of the Pleasant Valley community council.

There is no mayor in Young, nor is there a chamber of commerce. The community council, voted in by the residents, takes their place.

Facilities in Young

Pleasant Valley Community Center
Functions are often hosted at the community center and rodeo ground, located in the middle of the town. The rodeo ground has trailer hookups and it is possible to arrange use of bathrooms if you want to camp here.

Young Public School

Young Public School has approximately 75 students from pre-primary to twelfth grade. In 2002 state-funded upgrades and additions were started. These are almost complete.

Medical Center and Thrift Shop

There is no doctors' surgery in Young. The clinic is open Monday through Thursday and is staffed by a nurse practitioner from the nearby town of Globe. Emergency Medical Technicians (E.M.T.'s) respond to emergency situations, and there is a helicopter pad so that, when necessary, patients can be air-lifted out to hopital in Globe or Payson.

The thrift shop or "PV Mall" is staffed by volunteers and all the proceeds go to the medical center.

Fire and Emergency 911

Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by U.S. Forest Service fire-fighters, handle local fires. There is an emergency 911 network in Young.

Library

Young, AZ boasts a well-staffed library and its inventory includes many fascinating historic books about the region. The library also has computers and offers art classes and poetry readings.

Things to do in Young

Hiking - visit the Ranger Station for maps and information about hiking trails and the fauna and flora of the region.

Fishing - Haigler Creek is stocked with trout - fishing licences are required.

Swimming - There are swimming holes in Haigler Creek and Spring Creek

Camping - in the forest at designated camp sites or not, whatever you prefer.

Hunting - deer, elk, turkeys, bears and lions - as long as you have a license.

Accommodation

There is Motel located in the center of town, and there are other cabins and rooms available for overnight accommodation.

Restaurants

There are currently two restaurants in Young.

Alice's Restaurant and Bar sits high on a hill with amazing views of the mountains and valley. The food has a distinct southwestern flavor. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day except Thursday. In summer karaoke is held on the open patio.

The Antler Saloon and Cafe has been a landmark in Young for many years and serves breakfast, lunch and supper, including the delicious Antler Burger and home made pies. There are pool tables and a band stand, and bands from Phoenix often come here for dances. It is closed on Mondays.
